Improvers - Tuesdays 12.30-2.30pm

£108.00

Uniquely designed and delivered 6 x 6 week courses for those with some experience or who want to extend their skills further.

Tuesdays 12.30 – 2.30 pm at the Cause Arts Centre, Causeway Chippenham

Term 1: September 15th – October 20th 2026 – Still Life

We’ll be using a variety of traditional drawing materials and mark-making to capture the essence of everyday objects, as well as looking at proportion, basic drawing techniques and tone. Session one will include a talk on the history of Still Life and an introduction to mark-making.

 Term 2: November 3rd – December 8th 2026 – Portrait

Beginning with a brief history of portraiture and some practice at proportional drawing, we’ll understand the pros and cons of working from both first-hand drawing and photographs, experimenting with acrylic paint to understand how colour and mark-making underpin a successful portrait painting.

 Term 3: January 5th – February 9th 2027 – Urban

In two of these sessions we’ll be drawing on-site to capture the complexities and mood of an urban scene, learning how to apply 3-point perspective to represent space and architectural form. From our drawings we’ll be developing a set of pieces using a variety of print-making processes

 Term 4: February 23rd – March 30th 2027 – Movement

We’ll begin with a quick talk looking at how artists have represented movement historically, then applying these methods to a series of experimental drawings and paintings. We’ll produce a series of drawings, both at the Cause and during one onsite visit, and develop these into a final outcome.

Term 5: April 13th – May 18th 2027 – Landscape

How do colour and mark-making impact on the way we read distance and proximity in a landscape painting? We’ll look at how art movements from Impressionism onwards have evolved landscape painting, using acrylic as our medium. These sessions will include two on-site drawing sessions to capture landscapes first-hand, allowing us to develop these into paintings in your own personal way.

 Term 6: June 8th – July 13th 2027 – New Adventures

In these stand-alone sessions, we’ll be using a variety of mediums and processes that we haven’t yet used in the sessions to interpret a given theme. Materials and processes will include plaster, clay, mixed media and cardboard, with a chance to experiment in both 2D and 3D.

Taught by local artist and designer Charlie who has over 25 years experience teaching art in a variety of settings from Further and Higher education colleges and universities.

£108 per term (with an optional £10 materials donation  – Please note: if you’re on a low income we don’t expect you to pay this)

6 weeks of 2 hour sessions, includes all materials and tea/coffee (donations very welcome to help with refreshment costs)
